Taxpayers support proposed rebates for renters and mortgage holders

Author: Carson Binda 2024/09/23

VANCOUVER, B.C.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding a $900-million rebate proposal from the B.C. Conservatives which would return money to renters and homeowners in B.C.

“Every dime that can be returned to taxpayers is a step in the right direction,” said Carson Binda, B.C. Director for the CTF. “Rent and mortgage payments are taking a big bite out of British Columbians’ wallets, it’s past time to return some of that money to taxpayers.”

The proposed B.C. Rent and Mortgage Rebate would exempt up to $3,000 per month in rent or mortgage payments from the B.C. income tax. Budget 2026 would see an immediate exemption of $1,500 per month, increasing by $500 per year to a maximum of $3,000.

“This is about delivering real relief to renters and homeowners who are already feeling financially squeezed,” Binda said. “Politicians are picking taxpayers’ pockets in every direction and taxpayers need to see tax-relief policies from all parties.”
