ST. JOHN’S, N.L.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is slamming the Furey government for breaking its budget promise as the 2025 Newfoundland and Labrador budget adds more government debt.
“Premier Furey promised to stop racking up government debt, but he’s throwing that out the window and putting taxpayers on the hook for even more irresponsible borrowing,” said Devin Drover, CTF Atlantic Director. “Newfoundland and Labrador families have to live within their means, but the Furey government is refusing to do the same.”
The Furey government will run a $371-million deficit in 2025 despite a previous commitment to run a surplus this year. Total government debt is projected to increase by more than nine per cent this year.
Interest charges will cost taxpayers $1.2 billion this year, which is around $2,200 per person.
Meanwhile, despite rising costs and the threat of tariffs, the budget provides no meaningful tax relief for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
“Rather than making tough decisions, Premier Furey has abandoned his promise to taxpayers while doing nothing to help them,” said Drover. “Not only is he piling up more debt, he’s refusing to provide any relief to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who need it the most.”
