The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is releasing its 2023-24 New Brunswick pre-budget proposal, calling on the Higgs government to lower the sales tax, replace business subsidies with corporate tax cuts and maintain its budget surplus.
“With New Brunswickers facing decades-high inflation and soaring living costs, now is the time for tax relief,” said CTF Interim Atlantic Director Jay Goldberg. “New Brunswick families are paying $1,000 more for groceries this year. Families need relief and the Higgs government can help by lowering taxes.”
The CTF’s proposal calls on the Higgs government to reduce the provincial portion of the HST from 10 per cent to eight per cent and maintain its strong fiscal position by keeping the budget balanced.
“Premier Blaine Higgs has a strong record when it comes to balancing the budget and lowering taxes,” said Goldberg. “But soaring inflation means that Higgs needs to do even more. Now is the time to lower the sales tax and continue to pay down the province’s debt.”
