OTTAWA, ON: Canadian Taxpayers Federation Federal Director Aaron Wudrick released the following statement in response to today’s announcement by the Trudeau government that Canadian taxpayers will not be paying for the security costs of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex:
“This is a tremendous victory for Canadian taxpayers and the Trudeau government for doing the right thing. Canadians were unequivocal that the Duke and Duchess are welcome here, but that they need to pay their own way.
“In January, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation delivered a petition with over 80,000 signatures (which has since grown to more than 120,000 signatures) telling the government not to cover expenses for the Duke and Duchess. It’s good to see that the Prime Minister has listened. We look forward to the Trudeau government taking similar steps to ensure taxpayer money is not spent on other former representatives of the Crown, such as retired governors general.
“We wish the Duke and Duchess all the best as they embark on their new, financially independent life in Canada.”
