Toronto, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Toronto Mayor John Tory to reverse his plan to increase Toronto property taxes by 5.5 per cent this year.

“Now is the worst possible time for a massive property tax hike,” said CTF Ontario Director Jay Goldberg. “Taxpayers are being forced to deal with soaring inflation and sky-high interest rates. Governments should be looking for ways to ease the burden, not make it heavier.”

The average home price in Toronto was $1,051,000 in 2022. A family that owns that home will see property taxes rise by $365.

“Tens of thousands of Ontarians are turning to foodbanks for help this year as prices continue to rise,” said Goldberg. “The average family’s grocery bill was up $1,000 last year. Hardworking taxpayers can’t afford to fork out hundreds of dollars extra in property taxes to fund Toronto’s bloated budget.

“Under Tory’s leadership, operating spending has increased by 43 per cent over the past five years,” said Goldberg. “Tory should be looking for ways to cut spending, not punish hardworking families.”
