Taxpayers Federation calls on Ford to keep his promise ahead of looming gas tax cut deadline

Author: Jay Goldberg 2022/03/09

Toronto, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Ontario Premier Doug Ford to honour his promise to cut the gas tax by 5.7 cents per litre by March 31, 2022.

“Last November, Premier Ford reaffirmed his commitment to deliver a 5.7 cents per litre gas tax cut no later than March 31, 2022,” said CTF Ontario Director Jay Goldberg. “Ontarians have been waiting for this tax cut since it was first promised in 2018 and it’s high time that Ford delivers.”

Ontario taxpayers are facing record gas prices, with the average price of gas in Ontario now 54 cents per litre higher than it was exactly one year ago.

Politicians around the world, including Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, are delivering tax relief to help taxpayers deal with record prices at the pumps, while Ontarians are still waiting for Ford to act.

“Ford should follow the lead of Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and cut gas taxes to help struggling taxpayers,” said Goldberg. “Kenney is cutting the gas tax by 13 cents per litre, more than double the gas tax cut Ford has promised. Ford owes it to Ontarians to keep his election promise and lower gas taxes.”

An Ontario family with a sedan and a minivan filling up once a week stands to save nearly $400 every year through Ford’s promised gas tax cut.
