Taxpayers Federation applauds Furey’s gas tax cut extension

Author: Jay Goldberg 2023/03/14

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding the Furey government’s decision to extend its seven cent per litre gas tax cut for another year.

“The Furey government’s tax cut extension will continue to help Newfoundland and Labrador families lower costs in the wake of decades-high inflation,” said CTF interim Atlantic Director Jay Goldberg. “This gas tax cut extension will save two-car families up to an additional $475.”

The Furey government first cut the province’s gas excise tax by seven cents per litre in June of 2022. The gas tax cut was set to expire at the end of March, but the Furey government’s announcement will see the tax cut extended for an additional twelve months. This is the second time the Furey government has extended the gas tax cut.

The gas tax cut extension announcement comes just weeks before the federal government is set to increase the carbon tax. On Apr. 1, the carbon tax will increase to 14 cents per litre.

“As the Trudeau government hammers Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with an even higher carbon tax, this provincial gas tax cut will help taxpayers make ends meet,” said Goldberg. “The Furey government is doing the right thing by lowering costs for taxpayers at a time when the federal government is driving up costs even further.”
