Taxpayers criticize Houston’s cabinet size
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is criticizing Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston for expanding the size of the provincial cabinet.
“Houston is starting his second term by insulting taxpayers who are sick of putting more money in the pockets of greedy politicians,” said Devin Drover, CTF Atlantic Director. “Houston’s government will be spending more money on provincial cabinet ministers than any other Atlantic province.”
Houston appointed 21 cabinet ministers at yesterday’s swearing-in ceremony in Nova Scotia. This is more than any other province in Atlantic Canada and up three from Houston’s former cabinet.
The next highest is New Brunswick, with 18 cabinet ministers. Newfoundland and Labrador has 17 cabinet ministers, and Prince Edward Island has only 12.
Nova Scotia cabinet ministers make $138,280. The premier makes $197,780 total.
“Rather than trying to keep costs down for Nova Scotia taxpayers, Houston has just added over half a million in new spending,” said Drover.
