Taxpayers call on Ford to extend his gas tax cut

Author: Jay Goldberg 2024/09/30

Toronto, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Ontario Premier Doug Ford to extend his government’s 6.4 cent per litre gas tax cut ahead of its fall fiscal update.

“The typical Ontario family has saved almost $1,000 since the Ford government cut the gas tax in July 2022,” said CTF Ontario Director Jay Goldberg. “But unless the government acts, those savings will end at the end of this year. Families cannot afford higher gas taxes and the Ford government must extend the gas tax cut to ensure that doesn’t happen.”

Ontario finance ministers usually present their fall fiscal updates in October. Last October, Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy announced a six-month extension to the government’s 6.4 cent per litre gas tax cut, which was again extended in the Ford government’s 2024 budget.

The gas tax cut’s expiry date is currently slated to be Dec. 31.

“The best thing governments can do to help make life more affordable for taxpayers is leave more money in their wallets,” Goldberg said. “The typical two-car Ontario family saves about $30 a month thanks for the Ford gas tax cut and its crucial to ensure those saving continue.”

Taxpayers have saved more than $2.5 billion since July 2022 thanks to the government’s temporary gas tax cut.
