St. John’s, N.L.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey’s government for extending its 8.05 cents per litre gas tax cut for another year.
“The Furey government deserves tremendous credit for extending its gas tax cut that has already saved families hundreds of dollars,” said Devin Drover, CTF Atlantic Director. “Now taxpayers won’t have to worry about provincial gas taxes going up for at least another year.
“That’s important because the Trudeau government is increasing the federal carbon tax in less than a month.”
Finance Minister Siobhan Coady announced that the gas tax cut would be extended until March 31, 2026.
The federal carbon tax is increasing to about 21 cents per litre of gasoline and 25 cents per litre of diesel on April 1, 2025.
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have saved more than $30 million annually at the pumps since the Furey government introduced its gas tax cut in June 2022.
The CTF has previously called for the tax cut to be made permanent.
“Extending the tax cut is great news for taxpayers, but the Furey government should go one step further and make this tax cut permanent,” said Drover. “At a time when the Trudeau government is hammering Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with higher taxes, Furey should show leadership and cut the gas tax permanently.”
