The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston’s announcement to cut the provincial portion of the HST by one percentage point.

“This announcement is tremendous news for hardworking families all across Nova Scotia,” said Devin Drover, CTF Atlantic Director. “This HST cut will save families big time nearly everywhere they shop and save the average Nova Scotian household over $350 a year.”

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation advocated for an HST cut in its most recent pre-budget submission.

Houston announced today that the provincial government will cut the provincial portion of HST from 10 per cent to nine per cent as of April 1, 2025.

This tax cut will also reverse the two-percentage point HST increase imposed on Nova Scotians fourteen years ago.

“Whether families are struggling to replace an old appliance, or looking to buy a new car, this HST cut will have a huge impact on the lives of Nova Scotians,” said Drover.

Once this tax cut is phased in, Nova Scotia will have the lowest sales tax burden in Atlantic Canada.
