Taxpayers applaud gas tax cut extension

Author: Gage Haubrich 2024/09/25

WINNIPEG, MB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding Premier Wab Kinew for extending the fuel tax cut until Dec. 31, but taxpayers are also calling on the government to make the tax cut permanent.

“Kinew is right to extend the cut and keep saving Manitobans money at the gas station,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Tax relief at the pumps goes a long way to help Manitobans make ends meet,”

Manitoba’s fuel prices have been the lowest in the country since the gas tax cut on Jan. 1.

Because of the gas tax cut, families are saving about $10 every time they fill up a minivan and about $13 every time they fill up a pick-up truck.

In total, a Manitoba family filling up a minivan and a pick-up truck once every two weeks have saved more than $440 over the course of the cut so far.

The three-month extension of the gas tax cut means that same Manitoba family will save about $147 more.

“Taxpayers shouldn’t be stuck worrying about tax hikes at the end of every extension, the government needs to make this tax cut permanent,” Haubrich said. “Making the tax cut permanent allows guaranteed savings for Manitobans every year. Kinew needs to permanently axe the gas tax.”
