• United Conservative Party promises to expand Taxpayer Protection Act
• Taxpayer Protection Act would stop personal and business tax hikes in Alberta

LETHBRIDGE, AB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is applauding the United Conservative Party’s promise to expand the Taxpayer Protection Act to shield Alberta taxpayers from income and business tax hikes.

“This is excellent news for taxpayers in Alberta,” said Kris Sims, Alberta Director, Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “If taxpayers know that their income taxes and their business taxes will not go up here, we will have hardworking folks flocking to our province because of this Alberta advantage.”

Currently, the Taxpayer Protection Act requires a government to win a referendum before it could impose a provincial sales tax on Albertans.

It’s one of the strongest laws protecting taxpayers in North America and it’s the reason Alberta is the only province that doesn’t have a PST, saving taxpayers thousands of dollars per year.

The UCP is promising to expand the Taxpayer Protection Act to require a provincial government to hold a referendum before it could increase income or business taxes in Alberta.

“If the Taxpayer Protection Act were expanded like the UCP is promising, Alberta would become a beacon for people who value lower taxes and an entrepreneurial spirit,” said Sims.
