BC: Top Paid Politicians in Langley

Author: Jordan Bateman 2014/08/11

Pardon the narrow focus of this blog post, but I do live in Langley, B.C., and many of us here believe Langley to be the centre of the universe. In fact, it’s a known fact (as our federal director – and Langley boy) Gregory Thomas points out, that you can draw a direct line from anywhere in the universe right to Langley, B.C.

Anyway, Langley is split into two municipalities (the Township, with 110,000 people, and the City, with 23,000 people), meaning we have two mayors and two councils. We also have seven school trustees, two provincial cabinet ministers and an MP. So which one of these 26 elected officials are the highest paid politician in Langley?

None of them.

The highest paid politician in Langley governs the 69 people of the Kwantlen First Nations reserve: Councillor Tumia Knott, who took home $118,895 tax-free last year – the equivalent of $176,000 off-reserve.

Here’s the top 6 highest paid politicians in Langley:

  1. Tumia Knott, Kwantlen First Nation, $176,000 taxable equivalent
  2. Mark Warawa, Langley MP, $163,700
  3. Marilyn Gabriel, Kwantlen First Nation, $154,000 taxable equivalent
  4. Rich Coleman, Deputy Premier and BC Minister of Liquefied Natural Gas, $147,570
  5. Mary Polak, BC Minister of Environment, $147,570
  6. Jack Froese, Langley Township Mayor, $112,885 taxable equivalent
