Saskatchewan taxpayers need more balanced budgets

Author: Gage Haubrich 2025/02/20

SASKATOON, SK: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier Scott Moe to balance the budget, cut the sales tax and eliminate the small business tax. The CTF presented these recommendations in its 2025 pre-budget submission.

“The government needs to get its fiscal house in order and keep balancing the budget,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Taxpayers can’t afford to waste anymore money on increasing debt interest payments.”

The Saskatchewan government has only balanced two out of its last ten budgets. The government finished last year with a $182-million surplus. It currently projects a $744-million deficit and $728 million in debt interest payments for this year.

The CTF’s submission calls for ending the government employee wage premium and scrapping corporate welfare to reduce government spending. Government employees are paid more than regular employees doing similar jobs.

“Taxpayers need relief to help weather any incoming economic storms on the horizon,” Haubrich said. “Families are struggling to afford the basics and the government needs to put more money back in the pockets of Saskatchewanians with tax relief.”

To make life more affordable, the CTF is calling on the government to cut the PST by one percentage point. This would save the average Saskatchewan family about $337 per year.

The pre-budget submission also calls on the government to permanently eliminate the small business tax. This would save the average small business about $3,600 per year.

The CTF is also calling on the government to start a non-renewable resource revenues heritage fund so the province can save money for the future.
