Saskatchewan needs a tax cut in the next budget

Author: Gage Haubrich 2024/02/15

SASKATOON, SK: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier Scott Moe to cut the sales tax, cut the small business tax and end corporate welfare. The CTF presented these recommendations in its 2024 pre-budget submission.

“Saskatchewanians have gone too long without a tax cut,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Families are struggling to afford rent, gas and groceries. It’s time that the government put money back in the pockets of Saskatchewan taxpayers.”

The CTF is calling on the government to cut the PST by one percentage point. This would save the average Saskatchewan family about $322 per year.

The CTF’s pre-budget submission also calls on the government to permanently cut the small business tax. This would save the average small business about $2,000 per year.

“The government is failing to provide tax relief because it’s hooked on wasting too much taxpayers’ money,” said Haubrich. “The government needs to stop its wasteful spending and end taxpayer-funded corporate welfare handouts.”

The CTF’s submission calls for scrapping corporate welfare and ending the government employee wage premium to reduce government spending. Government employees are typically paid 5.5 per cent more than everyone else, according to the Fraser Institute.

The CTF is also calling on the government to start a non-renewable resource revenues heritage fund so the province can save money for the future.
