Question for Carney: How much will gas prices go down?

Author: Franco Terrazzano 2025/01/31

OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Liberal leadership front-runner Mark Carney to clearly explain how much his carbon tax replacement plan will cost Canadians.

“Taxpayers have a simple question for Carney: Will gas prices and home heating bills go down under his plan?” said Franco Terrazzano, CTF Federal Director. “Whether the carbon tax is up front or hidden, Canadians can’t afford to pay more to fuel up their cars, heat their homes and buy groceries.”

Today, Carney announced he would immediately remove the consumer carbon tax if he became prime minister.

However, Carney said his government would be “integrating a new consumer carbon credit market into the industrial pricing system.” Carney also said he would “improve and tighten” the industrial carbon tax and impose carbon tax tariffs on imports into Canada.

“Carney’s plan would impose a tax on businesses and businesses pass those costs on to Canadians,” Terrazzano said. “Taxes on refineries make gas more expensive, taxes on utilities make home heating more expensive and taxes on fertilizer plants increase costs for farmers and that makes groceries more expensive.

“Carney needs to be clear and honest about how much this will cost Canadians.”

Carney also said his government would “create a system of incentives to reward Canadians” for making environmentally friendly purchases.

“Instead of sending rebates that still don’t cover the cost of the carbon tax, Carney would give Canadians a discount code to buy solar-powered blenders,” Terrazzano said. “Canadians can’t afford to pay a carbon tax by another name, Canadians want the carbon tax completely scrapped.”
