Poll shows 74 per cent of Saskatchewanians support a gas tax cut

Author: Gage Haubrich 2024/05/30

SASKATOON, SK: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released Insightrix polling showing 74 per cent of Saskatchewanians want the government to cut the provincial fuel tax.

“The numbers are clear: almost three-quarters of Saskatchewanians want the government to make gas more affordable,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Premier Scott Moe needs to listen to the people and cut the gas tax to provide relief at the pumps.”

The Saskatchewan government currently charges a fuel tax of 15 cents per litre on both gas and diesel.

The Insightrix poll asked Saskatchewanians if they support the government cutting the fuel tax.

Results of the poll show:

  • 49 per cent strongly support
  • 26 per cent somewhat support
  • 9 per cent somewhat oppose
  • 7 per cent strongly oppose
  • 10 per cent don’t know/prefer not to say

A two-car family, with a minivan and a light duty pickup truck, would be saving $11 and $15 every time they fill up each vehicle. If that family fills up those vehicles once every two weeks, they would be saving about $676 per year with a fuel tax cut.

The provincial governments of ManitobaOntario and Newfoundland and Labrador have all cut gas taxes to save drivers money.

“Saskatchewanians clearly want a gas tax cut,” said Haubrich. “Other provinces have been able to provide relief to residents, it’s time for the government of Saskatchewan to step up.
