The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey to make his government's temporary gas tax cut permanent. Without action from the government, the tax cut will expire at the end of March, leading to a seven cent per litre increase in gasoline taxes.

"With gas prices far too high and inflation at levels not seen in decades, now is a terrible time to raise taxes on Newfoundlanders and Labradorians," said CTF interim Atlantic Director Jay Goldberg. "Furey should immediately announce that he will make his temporary gas tax cut permanent."

Beginning in May, Furey reduced the provincial gas excise tax by seven cents per litre for a period of eight months. That tax cut saved the typical two-car household $275 in 2022. The initial tax relief period was extended by the Furey government last fall until March 31, 2023.

“With the federal government’s plan to triple the carbon tax, soaring energy bills and household grocery bills up by $1,000 this year over last, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians need Furey to deliver permanent tax relief,” said Goldberg.
