NEWS RELEASE: B.C. Taxpayers need gas tax holiday

Author: Carson Binda 2024/06/28

VANCOUVER, B.C.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Premier David Eby to suspend the provincial motor fuels tax ahead of the Canada Day long weekend.

“British Columbians are going to be out on the roads exploring our beautiful province over the Canada Day long weekend and the government is hitting them hard with taxes,” said Carson Binda, B.C. Director for the CTF. “Eby should make family road trips more accessible this summer by giving us a gas tax holiday.”

The provincial motor fuels tax adds about 15 cents to the cost of a litre of gasoline. Suspending the tax would save families about $11 every time they fuel up their minivan

British Columbians pay the highest gas taxes in the country.

Two-thirds of British Columbians want gas taxes cut, according to polling by Innovative Research Group.

More than one-in-three British Columbians are “seriously considering” leaving the province because of affordability, according to recent polling by the Angus Reid Institute

“Premiers like Wab Kinew, Andrew Furey and Doug Ford have suspended their provincial fuel taxes to save families money and Eby should do the same in B.C.,” Binda said. “It’s time for Eby to take affordability seriously and provide relief for British Columbians by scraping his gas tax.”
