Ford poised to increase gas taxes

Author: Jay Goldberg 2022/10/31

Toronto, ON: Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s gas tax cut is set to expire two months from today, leading to a tax hike of 5.7 cents per litre for taxpayers at the pumps. Ford has long promised a permanent gas tax cut.

“With gas prices sky-high and inflation at levels not seen in decades, this is the worst possible time to raise taxes on Ontarians,” said CTF Ontario Director Jay Goldberg. “Ford should immediately announce that he’s keeping his promise and making his temporary gas tax cut permanent.”

Beginning in July, Ford reduced the provincial gas excise tax by 5.7 cents per litre. The tax cut is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2022. The typical two-car household will have saved $190 by the end of the relief period.

“With energy bills expected to soar, the federal government’s plan to triple the carbon tax and household grocery bills up by $1,000 this year over last, Ontarians need Ford to honour his word and deliver permanent tax relief,” said Goldberg.

When Ford first promised to reduce gas taxes by 5.7 cents per litre in 2018, he committed to making the cut permanent.
