Toronto, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on Ontario Premier Doug Ford to immediately implement his promised 5.7 cents per litre gas tax cut as Ontario drivers face record-high gas prices.
“Ontario taxpayers have been waiting for the premier to keep his promise and cut the gas tax for almost four years and its finally time for him to deliver,” said Ontario CTF Director Jay Goldberg. “Taxpayers are dealing with surging inflation and soaring costs of living. Now more than ever, Ontarians need relief at the pumps. Ford should quit stalling and implement his tax cut.”
Drivers in Toronto are facing a record-high price of 150.9 cents per litre at the pumps.
During the 2018 election campaign, Ford promised to cut the provincial gas excise tax by 5.7 cents per litre. He has since promised to implement the tax cut by March 31, 2022.
“Ford’s promised gas tax cut will impact the budgets of families all across the province,” said Goldberg. “Families stand to save hundreds of dollars a year if Ford finally comes through. Those savings will begin to be felt immediately at the pumps”
A family filling up a minivan and a sedan once a week stands to save over $390 a year through Ford’s proposed tax cut.
“With a federal carbon tax hike just weeks away, Ontarians can’t wait any longer for tax relief,” said Goldberg. “Ford needs to deliver on his promise to lower gas prices and he should do it now.”
