Toronto, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is reminding Ontario Premier Doug Ford that the clock is ticking on his promise to cut Ontario’s gas excise tax by 5.7 cents a litre before the end of this March.
“Ontario taxpayers have been waiting nearly four years for Premier Ford to keep his commitment to voters and lower gas taxes,” said Ontario CTF Director Jay Goldberg. “Ford was right when he told Ontarians that they needed relief at the pumps four years ago, and taxpayers are finally counting on him to deliver.”
Ford announced in November of 2021 that his government would honour its commitment to cut gas taxes by 5.7 cents per litre before March 31, 2022. The Ford government now has 85 days left before its own deadline.
“Ford’s promised gas tax cut will deliver meaningful relief to hardworking Ontario taxpayers,” said Goldberg. “Families could save hundreds of dollars a year when they fill up at the pumps to drive their kids to school, buy groceries or head to work.”
A family filling up a minivan and a sedan once a week stands to save over $390 a year through the premier’s government’s proposed tax cut.
“With a federal carbon tax hike coming in April and the highest inflation levels in decades, Ontario taxpayers need relief,” said Goldberg. “Ford promised voters he would stand up for taxpayers. After three years, it’s high time for Ford to keep his promises and leave more money in taxpayers’ wallets.”
