CTF welcomes Supreme Court of Canada ruling on council size

Author: Jay Goldberg 2021/10/01

TORONTO, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is welcoming the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision to uphold the Ford government’s 2018 legislation that reduced the size of Toronto City Council.

“This is a great day for Ontario taxpayers,” said Jay Goldberg, the Interim Ontario Director at the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “Premier Doug Ford was right in insisting that Toronto City Council was too large and too costly. The Ford government’s decision to cut the size of Council in half saves Ontario taxpayers millions of dollars each and every year.”

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation intervened in the case when the Ford government’s legislation to reduce the size of Toronto City Council was first challenged in court. The CTF intervened in support of the Ford government’s municipal reform legislation.

“It is great to see that the Supreme Court of Canada agreed with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and citizens all across the province that the Ford government had every right to cut the size of Toronto City Council,” said Goldberg. “The Ford government should use the Toronto reforms as a model to reduce the size of bloated municipal councils across the province.”
