CTF urges Liberal MPs from B.C. to stand against the carbon tax

Author: Carson Binda 2024/10/22

VANCOUVER, B.C.: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is urging Liberal MPs from B.C. to fight for carbon tax relief at Wednesday’s Liberal Party caucus meeting, with new polling showing two-thirds of British Columbians want carbon taxes removed from home heating costs this winter.

“British Columbians need to see relief on our home heating bills this winter so Liberal MPs need to stop acting like chickens and stand up to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at Wednesday’s caucus meeting,” said Carson Binda, British Columbia Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “The B.C. NDP and B.C. Conservatives have pledged to scrap the carbon tax, now Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is the only thing standing in the way of carbon tax relief for British Columbians.”

New polling from Leger shows that a clear majority of British Columbians want the carbon tax to be removed from home heating this winter, following an exception last winter on home heating oil – largely benefiting Atlantic Canadians.

“British Columbians need our MPs to represent us in Ottawa, that means standing up to the prime minister against unfair policies that make life more unaffordable,” Binda said. “Atlantic MPs from the Liberal Party are standing up to Trudeau, why are B.C.’s leaving us in the cold?”

The Leger poll found high support across the country for removing the carbon tax from all home heating fuels:

British Columbia: 66 per cent support

Atlantic Canada: 68 per cent support

Quebec: 49 per cent support

Ontario: 60 per cent support

Saskatchewan and Manitoba: 55 per cent support

Alberta: 70 per cent support

National: 60 per cent support

“British Columbia families will pay $330 extra to heat their homes this winter because of the carbon tax and another $23 every time they fill up the minivan,” said Binda. “MPs like Jonathan Wilkinson need to show British Columbians that they take affordability seriously by standing up against the carbon tax.”
