  • Government claims Alberta's carbon tax at the pump is 6.7 ¢/L, but on a pump price of $1.24, carbon taxes make up about 35.7 ¢/L

CALGARY, AB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) held its 20th annual Gas Tax Honesty Day in Calgary today to educate motorists about all the taxes they’re paying at the pump.

“Albertans are told that they’re paying a carbon tax of 6.7 cents per litre at the pumps,” said CTF Alberta Director Colin Craig. “That’s not really true. People need to remember there are lots of other provincial and federal taxes on fuel. Total carbon taxes on fuel actually represent about 35.7 cents per litre right now. It’s crazy to think the premier and prime minister want to increase the carbon tax.”

Craig noted that although the government claims its carbon tax on fuel is $30/ton, total fuel taxes actually represent a $158/ton carbon tax.

South of the border, people and businesses in Montana are only paying about 17 cents per litre in fuel taxes (CDN $) while those in Idaho are only paying 14 cents per litre (CDN $). More importantly, the United States continues to rebuff calls for a national carbon tax.

Other interesting figures from this year’s Gas Tax Honesty Day report include:

  • A 64-litre vehicle fill up will include about $22.77 in taxes
  • Albertans will pay $628.67 in fuel taxes for the average vehicle each year
  • In April 2018, taxes made up approximately 29 per cent of the average pump price

The CTF has opposed the Alberta government’s carbon tax since day one and will be soon going to court to oppose the Trudeau government’s carbon tax.
