CTF collects 30,000 petition signatures opposing expense payments to former governors general

Author: Aaron Wudrick 2018/11/08

OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is announcing that it’s collected more than 30,000 signatures demanding that the Trudeau government stop covering expenses for former governors general.

“You know Canadians have had enough when more than 30,000 of us sign a petition in one week,” said CTF Federal Director Aaron Wudrick. “Everyone – including all of the provincial lieutenant governors in the country – knows that you shouldn’t be keeping your expense account after you leave your job."

“Canadians are angry and they don’t want to see their tax dollars wasted on expenses for people who used to hold a ceremonial job.”

The petition demands an end to the policy that allows former governors general to bill taxpayers up to $206,000 per year. Former governor general Adrienne Clarkson’s expenses have totaled more than $1.1 million since she left office in 2005.

The CTF will continue to collect signatures and present the petition to the government at a later date.

The CTF’s petition calling on the Trudeau government to end the former governors general expense policy is available HERE.
