CTF asks Valérie Plante to keep her promise; compensate Montrealers for her last tax hike

  • During the last campaign, Valérie Plante promised Montrealers their tax bills wouldn’t go up faster than inflation;
  • In her 2018 budget, Valérie Plante hiked taxes by 3.3%, breaking her promise;
  • The Canadian Taxpayers Federation asks Valérie Plante to reduce the planned tax hike for this year to compensate Montrealers for last year’s tax hike.

MONTRÉAL, QC – The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) asks the Plante administration to keep her promise and limit municipal tax-hikes to inflation over the course of her entire mandate.

According to CTF calculations, Montreal must reduce it’s proposed hike by 1.18 percentage points to bring Montrealers’ average tax burden increase in-line with inflation since the beginning of her mandate.

“When Valérie Plante promised Montrealers she wouldn’t raise taxes faster than inflation, we all believed her,” said CTF Quebec Director Renaud Brossard. “She broke her promise on her very first budget, but it’s not too late to do right by Montrealers and keep her promise over the course of her entire mandate.”

Last year, the Plante administration hiked taxes by 3.3% while 2018 inflation estimates were 2.1%.

This year, the Plante administration is proposing a 1.72% tax hike, in-line with 2019 inflation estimates.

Removing 1.18 percentage points this year would correct last year’s mistake and put Mayor Plante back on track to keep her promise.

“Montrealers are getting hit by huge taxes at all levels of government,” added Brossard. “Reducing the city’s planned tax-hike would give us a little well-deserved breathing room.”
