Time To Release Fire Hall Traffic Study

Author: Colin Craig 2013/10/31
  • Traffic study for new fire hall on Portage Ave. still secret, Ombudsman finds city has discretion to release it

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is challenging the City of Winnipeg to demonstrate it has changed in the wake of the scathing fire hall audit report. Specifically, the CTF is calling on the city to release a traffic study conducted prior to construction of a new fire hall on Portage Ave (the one in the clover leaf.)

The CTF requested the traffic study back in August 2012 after hearing allegations there were internal concerns about locating a fire hall in the middle of the clover leaf on Portage Ave. Ultimately, the city denied the CTF’s request, claiming a third-party refused to release the traffic study and that the report represented advice to government.

The CTF challenged that ruling with the Ombudsman. Ultimately, the Ombudsman’s office found that Shindico had no grounds to block release of the traffic study, but the city could release the report if it chose to.

“If the city wants to rebuild public trust after the scathing fire hall audit report, they can start by releasing the full traffic study for the new fire hall on Portage Ave,” said CTF Prairie Director Colin Craig. “If the city refuses to release the report it shows nothing has changed.”

While the city eventually released parts of the report, the most important parts have been withheld – the analysis and conclusion.

“Hopefully the report shows no serious public safety concerns about building a fire hall in the middle of a clover leaf,” added Craig. “After all, it’s already built.”
