WINNIPEG: After attending today's convention centre expansion announcement, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is hoping that the saying "third time's a charm" will ring true for taxpayers. With three projects now vying for over half a billion tax dollars, the CTF is hoping for public forums and a referendum on the proposals.

"Between a new bomber stadium, bus rapid transit and the convention centre's expansion plans, over half a billion tax dollars are being sought" said CTF Manitoba Director Colin Craig. "Hopefully our elected officials will follow in the lead of Toronto, Vancouver, Brandon, Steinbach and other cities that asked their citizens for approval through referendums."

The Big Three:

• UofM Stadium Proposal - $35 Million (Federal/Provincial)
  
• Rapid Transit - $327 Million (Federal/Provincial/City)
  
• ention Centre - $193 Million (Federal/Provincial/City)

"Our elected officials didn't run on funding these mega projects" added Craig. "Unlike fixing roads and funding education, these projects are considered by the public to be optional and support should be obtained through referendums before proceeding."

Craig noted that Winnipeggers could have voted on these projects at the same time they vote in the upcoming federal election.
