The CTF calls on governments to stop taxing gasoline taxes

Author: Carl Vallée 2016/05/19
  • According to a report produced by the CTF, Montrealers pay more for gasoline taxes than anywhere else in Canada
  • The "tax on tax" costs Quebec motorists $ 377M per year

MONTREAL, QC - As many Quebeckers set out on the road for the long weekend, the Canadian Taxpayers' Federation (CTF) calls on the governments of Quebec and Canada to stop the indecent practice of taxing Taxes on gas prices. The 18th Annual Gas Tax Honesty Report (French) released today shows that Quebeckers - especially Montrealers - pay more for gasoline taxes than anywhere else in Canada.

Currently, governments are taxing the QST and GST on gasoline prices after taking into account the carbon tax, the federal excise tax and the provincial fuel tax. In total, Montrealers pay $ 0.50 / liter in taxes, almost double that paid by other jurisdictions across the country.

"Quebec motorists are already overtaxed at the pump with no less than five different taxes that inflate the price of gasoline and thus remove millions of dollars more from taxpayers' pockets," said CTF director Carl Vallée . "Given the already too high level of taxation of Quebeckers, the least a government could do is stop being greedy and stop taxing the taxes they have put in place. "

On the Island of Montreal, the "tax on the tax" amounts to just over five cents per liter. For the average motorist, that's about three dollars less in his pockets every time he fills up. By staggering this over a year, the "tax on the tax" costs the average Montreal car owner nearly $100 more.

"Quebec ranks last among provinces and territories in terms of per capita disposable income," added Mr. Vallée. "Québec elected representatives should make an effort to ensure that Quebeckers cease to occupy the unenviable position of the most taxed Canadians at the pumps. This effort can start now with a simple and concrete action: stop taxing taxes. "
