EDMONTON, AB: Today, Canadian Taxpayers Federation’s (CTF’s) Alberta Director, Franco Terrazzano, called out the Alberta government for committing to spend $700 million on another Calgary Olympics.
“The Alberta government has zero money for this,” said CTF’s Alberta Director, Franco Terrazzano. “It’s one thing to say you’re going to tighten your belt, it’s another thing to stop spending money on every new project that catches your eye.”
The average Albertan owes over $11,000 in provincial government debt alone. A recent report by the Parliamentary Budget Office projects the Alberta government’s debt to exceed $100 billion by 2021 and $1 trillion by 2051.
“The Olympics is a bad deal for Calgarians. But, it’s a very bad deal for the rest of Albertans,” continued Terrazzano. “Why should anyone in Grande Prairie pay a cent more in taxes so Calgary can have another Olympics?”
The CTF is urging Calgarians to vote NO in the November 13th referendum and is urging Albertans to ask the provincial government to reconsider its financial commitment.
