CALGARY, AB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is disappointed with the Alberta government’s decision to contribute $700 million towards the 2026 Calgary winter Olympic games.
“It’s one thing to pay lip service to fiscal responsibility, it’s another thing to stop wasting tax dollars on every pet project that catches your eye,” said Franco Terrazzano, Alberta Director with the CTF. “Given that the Alberta government is flat broke, how can the government justify spending $700 million on a month long sporting event? This should not be a priority.”
The average Albertan owes over $10,000 in provincial government debt alone. A recent report by the Parliamentary Budget Office projects the Alberta government’s debt to exceed $100 billion by 2021 and $1 trillion by 2051.
“Why should a single mother in Grande Prairie pay a cent more in taxes for Calgary’s sporting bonanza?” asked Terrazzano. “If the International Olympic Committee wants the 2026 Olympics in Calgary, they should fund 100 per cent of it.”
