No need for new - Mosaic Stadium in good shape

REGINA: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today released documents on Mosaic Stadium that the City of Regina previously refused to disclose. They detail how less than $6 million of maintenance would allow the stadium another decade of use. 

“Mosaic Stadium is not falling apart,” said Lee Harding, CTF Saskatchewan director. “When  examined with a fine tooth comb, nearly all aspects of the stadium were proclaimed to be in good to excellent shape. Mosaic Stadium can be improved and maintained at relatively little cost.” 

Almost all sections of the stadium were listed as good to excellent. A noteworthy exception was the East stands where some aspects do not meet modern code requirements. Even here, this part of the facility would only need $2.1 million of work over the next decade. 

“The city has wisely chosen to hold off on most of this maintenance until a decision has been made regarding the future of the stadium,” said Harding. 

The city is still withholding the designs for a renovated Mosaic Stadium that the Roughriders submitted in 2008. The release is before the Information and Privacy Commissioner. 

“We know from the information already disclosed that the Roughriders’ submission to the city was pivotal in launching the stadium debate. Why then won’t the city release this information?” Harding asked. “This information is vital to the public interest. Citizens should not swallow the dome message whole and allow politicians to sit on valuable information that could suggest this mega-project is unnecessary.”
