In this blog post (click here) I looked at how Saskatchewan has been wooing Manitobans in record numbers lately to pick up and move to the Rider province.

To my surprise, the story blew up into a bigger news item than I imagined (Metro News Regina/Winnipeg, Winnipeg Sun, CKLQ Brandon, Global Regina, CBC Manitoba, CKRM, CJWW, etc.)

Given the interest, I decided to drill down a bit further into the numbers and look at what's happening nation-wide in terms of interprovincial migration and how well Saskatchewan has fared.

If you look at the big picture, Saskatchewan has lost people through interprovincial migration over the past decade. 182,880 people have moved from Saskatchewan to other provinces while only 170,867 people have moved in from other provinces. In other words, Sask has seen a net loss of over 12,000 people.

However, there is a really good news story in the numbers if you drill down a bit further. During the first five years of that period, there was a net loss of over 24,000 people while over the last five years there has been a net increase of over 12,000 people.

In other words, Saskatchewan has really turned things around.

During the 2002/03 - 2006/07 period Saskatchewan saw a net loss of more than 22,000 people to Alberta. However, during the last three years Saskatchewan has seen more people move to Saskatchewan from Alberta than vice versa (more than 3,000 people).

As you can see in the nubers above, Saskatchewan has really turned things around in terms of turning net losses into net gains; with the exception of B.C.
