The Canadian Taxpayers Federation responded to Premier Prentice’s pay reduction announcement by applauding him for taking a good first step. The CTF noted Premier Klein did the same in order to have the moral authority to cut public sector pay, and make other tough cost-cutting measures that avoided tax increases. “Albertans should welcome Premier Prentice’s decision to cut cabinet and MLA pay,” said CTF Prairie Director Colin Craig. “It needs to be the first step in a cost containment strategy.”
Craig noted that spending by the Alberta government last year worked out to $10,754 per person while British Columbia’s per person spending was only $8,857; 21 per cent lower.
“It’s a myth that the Alberta government has to raise taxes due to low oil prices,” added Craig. “The B.C. government provides health care, education and other services for nearly a quarter less than what it costs to provide the same services in Alberta. There’s plenty of fat for Premier Prentice to trim.”
