Survey Responses: Randy Hillier |Tim Hudak | Frank Klees

TORONTO: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today released policy responses received from all the candidates for the leadership of the Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) Party. The CTF surveyed candidates in order to raise awareness of policy areas of interest to Ontario supporters of the CTF.

CTF Federal and Ontario Director Kevin Gaudet was pleased to receive the responses: “All candidates should be commended for participating in this survey. This survey puts their commitments to taxpayers on paper. It also allows those voters selecting the next opposition leader know more about the candidates.”

There a few policy highlights, including Ms. Elliott’s proposal to make taxes lower, simpler and flatter by introducing a type of flat tax. The flat tax is a policy long advocated by the CTF.

Mr. Hudak promised to scrap the McGuinty government’s corporate welfare programs that pick winners and loser in business. He also proposes spending constraint including plans to freeze senior government employee wages.

Mr. Hillier favours a strong constitutional amendment that would require governments to balance their budgets. He also proposes to end the monopolies for liquor, wine and beer sales.

Mr. Klees plans to champion democratic reforms including elected Senators in Ontario, voter initiated recall, and referenda.

Three candidates propose electing Senators. Unfortunately, none support eliminating the Health Tax.

Gaudet concluded, “it has been refreshing to see a campaign based on policy instead of personality. Let’s hope its stays that way.”
