Ontario’s Tax on Flights Rise on April Fools’ Day

Canadian Taxpayers Federation releases three new videos showing impact of jet fuel tax hikes

TORONTO, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is reminding Ontarians that the tax rate on jet fuel increased from 3.7 cents to 4.7 cents per litre at 12:01 a.m., April 1st, 2015.

This is the second fuel tax hike since last year’s budget, and by 2017 the tax is scheduled to grow from 2.7 cents to 6.7 cents per liter, which is a 148 per cent increase.

“The premier is taking us for April Fools with this tax hike, but it’s no joke”, said CTF’s Ontario Director, Christine Van Geyn. “Kathleen Wynne wants more tax revenue so she can finance her government’s waste and enormous deficit. But squeezing Ontarians out of their hard earned vacation fund isn’t the right answer.”

An estimated three million Ontarians already drive across the border looking for travel deals. With this new tax hike, the National Airlines Council of Canada estimates an additional 292,700 to 407,800 air travellers will be driven away.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is releasing three videos demonstrating the impact of the tax hike. You can view them here:

“Airports like Buffalo are already marketing to Canadians looking to escape both the cold and Ontario’s high air travel taxes,” said CTF Ontario Director Van Geyn. “Tax hikes like this one make the decision easier for Ontario families to drive to Buffalo or Ogdensburg before flying south on vacation.”
