Labour Council & CTF To Push For Audit Of Police HQ

Author: Colin Craig 2014/01/13

The Winnipeg Labour Council and Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) announced today they are putting aside their public policy differences to work together to push for an audit of the new Winnipeg police headquarters; currently $75 million over budget.

The two organizations will be reaching out to Winnipeggers to encourage them to call their councilors and push for an audit.

“It’s important to get to the bottom of the $75 million in cost overruns at the new police headquarters and make sure this type of thing doesn’t happen again,” said Dave Sauer, President – Winnipeg Labour Council. “The public needs to tell their councilors to vote for an audit at the upcoming council meeting.”

“It’s important to learn from the mistakes that were made,” said Colin Craig, Prairie Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “Some will say the administration’s report on the matter answers all the questions, but it doesn’t. An independent audit is needed as the admin review is a bit like asking a student to mark his or her own test.”

The two organizations will be calling on supporters and the public, directly as well through tools like Facebook and Twitter to urge them to contact their councillors.

The nine members of council who opposed an audit of the police headquarters are

Councillor Browaty
Mayor Katz
Councillor Mayes
Councillor Nordman
Councillor Pagtakhan
Councillor Sharma
Councillor Steen
Councillor Swandel
Councillor Wyatt
