Going, Going, Gone - The Numbers on Manitoba's Brain Problem

Author: Colin Craig 2009/10/08

While Manitoba's NDP government likes to talk about all the people moving to Manitoba from other parts of Canada, they seldom talk about all the people that have left Manitoba for greener pastures in other provinces.

According to Statistics Canada data, from 2001 to June, 2009, Manitoba saw 80,907 people move to Manitoba from other provinces. However, during the same period, 108,282 people left our province for a net loss of 27,375. That's more than the combined populations of Steinbach, Neepawa and Portage la Prairie.

Of the net loss of 27,375, Manitoba saw a net loss of 26,838 residents to B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. That should come as no surprise as those provinces have much more competitive tax rates.
