CTF Calls for 3 Hour Tax Protest
Toronto: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF)) is declaring Friday July 13th, 2007, 'Black Tax Friday' and calls on citizens and business owners in Toronto on this day to protest the mayor's efforts to impose new taxes in the city of Toronto. People are urged to phone Access Toronto and email their opposition to new taxes to the city of Toronto between 9 a.m. and noon on Friday the 13th.
"Friday the 13th is the last day before council sits to vote on Mr. Miller's new land transfer tax and Mr. Miller's new car tax. This will be the last chance people have to let the mayor and council know that they don't want new taxes and that the city has a spending problem not a revenue problem", said CTF's Ontario Director, Kevin Gaudet.
Toronto city council meets Monday July 16th to vote on the proposed new land transfer tax of 1.5% and the new vehicle registration tax of $60. Combined these taxes will take $360 million from Toronto taxpayers. Council has already approved a new garbage tax that will hit taxpayers for $56 million. This Fall, council will consider a new sidewalk tax, a new tax on liquor sales and a new billboard tax.
