FOIP Shows Nenshi Paying His Own Way in Lawsuit

Author: Derek Fildebrandt 2014/06/10

According to a Freedom of Information request that we obtained from the City of Calgary, Mayor Naheed Nenshi appears to be paying his own way in his lawsuit with Calgary development tycoon Cal Wenzel.

Yes. The CTF actually just brought you some good news. It happens from time to time.

In the heat of the lead up to the last October’s municipal elections, Mayor Neheed Nenshi called Wenzel a “Godfather” and accused him of orchestrating a dark conspiracy to take over city council. This prompted a $6 million defamation lawsuit.

As Mr. Nenshi made his comments as a candidate – and not as a public official – the CTF was clear that his defence should not be covered by city taxpayers, but by Mr. Nenshi and/or or his campaign. We never really got a solid answer about who would he expected to pay, but only that council discussed the issue.

And as it turns out, Mr. Nenshi is not sticking the bill to us. For this, the mayor deserves credit.
