FED: A Second Look at High Chief and Council Salaries

Author: Colin Craig 2014/08/08

The millionaire chief from B.C. has pretty much stolen the show since the federal government released chief and council pay information on July 29.

Rightfully so, media have paid a lot of attention to a guy who made more than the combined salaries of President Obama, Prime Minister Harper and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

However, there are plenty of other chiefs and councilors out there with eyebrow-raising salaries. The table below (an updated table from last week) includes several examples of high pay levels on reserves that either surpass the salary for mayors serving much larger communities or come pretty close.

But before I get to the table, I'll say it again - check the salaries of politicians on reserves across Canada and you'll find a real mix. Some politicians aren't earning much while others are raking in the cash. The whole point of the new transparency law is to empower the grassroots (especially) with information that can help them hold their leaders accountable.

So without further adieu, here are some numbers that deserve a second look...
