The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) is calling for the resignation of MLA Glenn Hagel in light of recent revelations about the theft of public money in 1992 .
The documents recently made public and widely covered by media clearly illustrate an effort to conceal the theft of roughly $6,000 by an NDP caucus employee. It is evident that Minister Hagel had knowledge of the theft in 1992 and failed to notify authorities.
"Today we know that a certain amount of public money was stolen from the NDP caucus in 1992," said CTF Saskatchewan director David MacLean. "We also know that former Caucus Chief of Staff Jim Fodey as well as Mr. Hagel received a letter of admission of fraud from former caucus employee Ann Lord. These facts are not disputed by the NDP."
"Whether this happened 15 years ago, or whether the amount was only $6,000 is irrelevant," said MacLean. "Elected MLAs have a fiduciary responsibility to report theft of any amount to the appropriate authorities. Hagel's refusal to do so represents a serious breach of trust and is grounds for termination and perhaps even prosecution."
"To the CTF this is an issue of accountability," added MacLean. "If a civil servant exhibited this kind of malfeasance, he or she could certainly be terminated - and rightfully so. MLAs are not above the law."
"Former Chief of Staff Jim Fodey at least did the honourable thing by resigning for his role in this affair. Hagel, his direct superior at the time, should see a similar fate."
