REGINA, SK: Today the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF), as part of its Generation Screwed campaign, brought its iconic, 12-foot long Debt Clock to the University of Regina as part of its second annual Debt Clock Campus Tour. The visit is part of a prairie-wide initiative that includes Debt Clock appearances at 11 different universities and colleges across Alberta and Saskatchewan. “Balancing the Federal Budget and paying down Canada’s debt needs to be a top priority for the Harper Government,” said Aaron Gunn, Executive Director for Generation Screwed. “We are committed to taking the fight to as many universities and colleges as possible to raise awareness and put the heat on politicians to take a stance.”

Since 2008, Canada’s Federal Government has added $157 billion to the country’s debt, bringing the Government’s total red ink to over $620 billion. This breaks down to $17,551 for every man, woman and child in the country. Interest payments on the debt cost each Canadian over $800 last year alone.

“Saddling future generations with debt is not only bad economic policy, but morally wrong,” said Gunn. “Future generations of Canadians deserve to inherit a country unburdened by government debt and interest payments, which is the message we will be delivering to students.”

The Generation Screwed campaign is a campus initiative by the CTF to raise awareness about the growing levels of government debt and unfunded liabilities facing future generations of Canadians. Launched in 2013, the initiative already boasts 24 student coordinators at campuses across the country, including Saskatchewan.
