CALGARY, AB: Today staff members of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) voted to form the United Capitalism Advocacy Workers Union (UCAWU). The UCAWU will bargain collectively to earn better working conditions, wages and pensions for CTF staff members.
UCAWU Local 2335 President, Derek Fildebrandt was elated at the successful open-ballot vote to unionize his brothers and sisters.
“This is a great day for advocates of capitalism and freedom. Finally, our members will be fairly compensated for their tireless efforts at holding big-government union bosses to account. Capitalists of the world, unite!” said union-boss Fildebrandt.
The CTF will open talks with Alberta Federation of Labour (AFL) President Gill McGowan to discuss the prospect of the UCAWU’s membership joining.
“We have a long history of working with the AFL,” said Fildebrandt. “We have high hopes that the AFL will embrace our members who work so hard to discredit their work.”
A major focus of the UCAWU will be to push for a defined-benefit workplace pension plan.
“We work day and night on issues like ensuring that government employee pension plans are solvent and sustainable. We just don’t have time to worry about our own retirement plans,” said Fildebrandt. “With all the money we save taxpayers, the least our greedy bosses like Scott Hennig could do is ensure that we have a one of those pension plans for ourselves.
The UCAWU will introduce a special levy on its members to support the NDP in the next provincial election.
