CTF Praises Proposed New Alberta Sunshine List

Author: Derek Fildebrandt 2013/10/11
  • New law must include severance, bonuses and government pension and benefit contributions

CALGARY, AB: Today the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) praised the Alberta government’s decision to introduce an employee ‘sunshine list.’

“The CTF has campaigned for a government ‘sunshine list’ for years and this was a priority objective for our organization in 2013. A ‘sunshine list’ of government employee salaries, pensions, severance and other compensation will bring greater accountability to government and provide a valuable source of data when examining government employee compensation on a macro level,” said CTF Alberta director, Derek Fildebrandt.

Fildebrandt spoke with the minister responsible for the implementation of the ‘sunshine list,’ Don Scott soon after the government’s announcement.

“We told Associate Minister Scott that we would like Alberta to have the gold-standard Sunshine law in the country, much like they now have with expense disclosure” said Fildebrandt. “We look forward to working with the associate minister to ensure that Alberta has the best possible ‘sunshine list’ available and to plug any potential loopholes.”

The CTF would like to see not just salaries listed or a global number listed for total compensation, but much like how MLA salaries are disclosed a breakdown of the global compensation. This should include the salary, any bonuses, severance payments and government contributions towards health and pension benefits.
