BC: Victoria Politicians Seek Gas Tax Hike

Author: Jordan Bateman 2013/12/11

Greater Victoria’s politicians are moving ahead with a two cent per litre gas tax increase for transit. The slide down that slippery slope continues.

If the provincial government approves the hike, gas taxes in the region will reach 42.5 cents per litre (this goes up and down depending on the GST charged on the per-litre price).

Here’s how Victoria’s gas taxes will break down:

  • 14.5 cents/L provincial
  • 10 cents/L federal
  • 6.7 cents/L provincial carbon tax
  • 5.5 cents/L transit
  • 5% GST on top of everything – At Victoria’s current low of 114.9 (thanks Gasbuddy.com), that’s 5.8 cents/L

The rest of Vancouver Island pays 37 cents per litre in gas tax.

Montreal (50 cents per litre) and the Lower Mainland (49.5 cents per litre) are still the two highest gas tax regimes in North America.
