BC: Sweat the Debt (July 8 Tour Report)

Author: Jordan Bateman 2013/07/08

The antepenultimate day of the 2013 B.C. Sweat the Debt Tour is in the books. We visited three cities today: Merritt, Kamloops and Barriere.

Parked near a Tim Hortons in Merritt, we had several people stop by and remark on the debt clock total, now at $57.6 billion. It’s almost always the same: disbelief and disgust.

Kamloops was our best attended stop today, with several media and people wandering by our location near the Thompson River, Interior Savings Centre, and Riverside Park. One man told me he was heading to Kelowna to plaster a sign on the back of his scooter saying, “Christy, what’s next? $15 scooter rentals?” Yes, the wheelchair rental fee is still a hot issue.

Barriere was relatively quiet, although we did have a very colourful conversation with one recent transplant to the region. He made no secret about his disgust of the cost of living in the Lower Mainland and the tax burden overall…

Tomorrow: 100 Mile House, Lac la Hache, Williams Lake and Quesnel. Then Prince George Wednesday and the final event of our 30-city tour.
