BC: More on the Carrot Rewards Nonsense

Author: Jordan Bateman 2015/09/03

In my latest op-ed, I address the goofy Carrot Rewards program, where the BC Government is spending $2.5 million to by Air Miles so they can be distributed to people doing “healthy” things, as recorded by a smartphone app.

A few more points I didn’t have space for.

First, the federal government should be chastised for starting this nonsense in the first place. Spend that $5 million on something more productive for health.

The case study showed only a 6% bump in the short term habits of the YMCA members who joined the program. Nanny statists may trumpet that as a significant achievement, but let’s put it into context: That means a person, instead of going to the gym 16 times, went 17 times. Big deal –  that has no effect on their overall health and is not worth millions in public spending. Plus there’s no evidence anyone kept going long term.

Finally, I wasn’t kidding about the number of boil water advisories in BC. Visit the various health region websites and you’ll find dozens of them, some stretching for years. It’s shocking.
